I grew up in an old church that had a large window that looked over the fields and out to the bay. I loved to watch the storms roll in. We could always tell a storm was coming by the smell in the air and by watching the birds. My Dad would sometimes explain the workings of things... so I'll pass it along.
That wonderful smell right before the storm hits... it is the smell of the rain bringing out the earth (petrichor and geosmin). Birds have their own way of telling a storm is coming. They have a receptor in their ear. I looked up the name - it is called the Vitali Organ. It measures the air pressure.
So neat.
Anyway, hope you like watching storms too.
