This is a one-of-a-kind codex book of two signatures and 40 pages. The covers are 2-ply matte board padded with thin polyester batting and covered with a black, gray, silver and white Japanese wave print cotton fabric. The end papers and text pages are marbled blue and gray photocopy paper in text-wt. and card stock. The color illustrations were done on a Canon Color Copier. The book has a pull-out chart of the clam’s fossil record and a pop-up of Botticelli’s “Venus de Milo”. It contains excerpts from a college text on the shellfish industry, several of Johnny Hart’s “B.C.” comic strips having to do with clams, the complete lyrics to Arlo Guthrie’s “The Story of Reuben Clamzo & His Strange Daughter in the Key of A”, pictures from several shell guides, and hand-lettered text of my own. The text is formatted and the covers and pages have been cut into the shape of a clam, thus making it a clamshell book.
