Victorian Vulcanite Scroll Brooch c. 1850. Vulcanite jewelry became fashionable during the reign of Queen Victoria when she began to wear black jewelry after the death of Prince Albert. Jewelry made of jet, onyx, bogwood and vulcanite were widely used materials at that time. This pin is made of vulcantite which is a lightweight wood-like material in a matt finish and is espresso in color. It measures 2 3/4 inches in length by 1 1/2 inches in width. It has one small chip on the tip of the scroll, and the clasp needs a slight adjustment.
It is a rare example of the period.
