A vintage knitting booklet, Kaiapoi No 50 from early-mid 1960s offering patterns for nine children's garments Some patterns have machine knitting instructions and all are suitable for 'TV knitting.'
From one of Australasia's leading 20th Century Woollen Mills, this booklet of children's knitting patterns - in colour and black and white - is evocative of my childhood, when mothers, grandmothers and aunties were prolific knitters, clothing their families in NZ wool. The Kaiapoi Woollen Mill, as we called its handsome building on the banks of the Cam River, still exists, though the spinning machines and looms ceased their clatter in 1978. During the 1960s new patterns were introduced after a company merger, and this pattern booklet judging by its price of two shillings and sixpence, probably came out between 1962 and NZ's change to Decimal Currency in 1967.
