This beautiful wood engraving of “A Guereza Monkey” is from the book The Life Story of Beasts written and illustrated by Eric Fitch Daglish (1892 – 1966) and published in 1931 by William Morrow & Company of New York. Daglish was a British engraver and author. He illustrated many classics by other authors (including books by Izaak Walton, Henry David Thoreau, Gilbert White and W.H. Hudson) but also authored and illustrated a number of natural history and wildlife/countryside books of his own. Daglish studied in England and Bonn, Germany and served in the military during the WWI, finally leaving in 1922. After his military service he moved to the countryside to pursue his lifelong ambition to write, and a year later in 1923 he published his first book. It was then that he also became interested in engraving. As his skills in wood engravings developed, he illustrated many of his books mostly in black and white although in some of his books the engravings were coloured. Today Daglish’s engravings are owned by the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, art galleries in Liverpool, Manchester, and the Metropolitan Museum of New York, Boston and Philadelphia. As you can see from the detail and likeness in this engraving, his work was exceptional when it was first published and is still as beautiful today.

There is very slight tanning of the paper around the print image and minimal wear around the page edges, in line with a book plate that is 80+ years old and was printed on a light, lower grade paper. There is no foxing or other damage sometimes associated with older book illustrations. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge is trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book pages measured 5-1/2 x 8” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in a standard 8x10 frame.
