I have used navy blue and bright red fibre for these - the outsides are navy with a variegated red slubby yarn twined about them and felted in. The insides are red. During the felting process the fibres creep through from one side to the other, the navy creeping through the red looks so cosy and inviting.. and the red that has crept through to the outside lifts and brightens the navy.
These are seamless slippers - the fibres are arranged around a resist and felted in one piece, then shaped by hand. There is no sewing involved in shaping the slippers, the only sewing takes place afterwards to attach fastners and soles.
The cuts for the openings are made part way through the felting process, and the edges 'healed', as I continue felting the edges develop a lovely natural finish.
These are very versatile slippers.. you can wear them in 3 different ways depending on how you feel. Up and open, fastened up or folded down - they all look good. The fastners are lovely Italian wooden toggles & felted cords.
I have handsewn leather soles onto these slippers, using beeswax coated strong thread (2 strands), which will will prolong the life of your slipper and offer more protection to your feet if you step on something. The soles are not intended for outdoor use (that said I have padded around the decking in mine to no ill effect). I have used a lovely strong but soft newbuck leather for the soles, with toe & heel bumpers to further protect both feet & slippers. The soles are a lightweight good quality leather & feel like a second skin, very comfortable.
These are a ladies size
UK 5 to 5.5
USA 7 to 7.5
Length approx 24cm
For other countries its best to measure the length of your feet. Stand on paper & draw around them keeping the pencil close to the edge of your foot - now measure the length at the longest point heel to toe. Or stand with your heels against a wall and have someone measure from the wall to the tip of your longest toe. Felt slippers mould themselves to your foot shape after a few days and fit like a second skin - amazingly comfortable! So long as your measurement is close you should be fine. Please feel free to email me with your foot measurements if you are unsure.
If you would like a pair especially made for you in your size / colours please email me to discuss your wishes
Wool felt slippers keep your feet comfortably at body temperature, they allow your feet to breath. From personal use I find they keep my feet neither hot or cold -they`re just right! Wool felt is naturally dirt & odour repellent. And they are ALL NATURAL materials - which is a major bonus in my book.
I send slippers / boots in a box so they arrive neat, crisp and in shape. If you intend to give them as a gift I can send them in a pretty box - a recycled shoe box covered in a collage made from pretty pages recycled from old books and magazines.. this will only be done if specifically requested.
Easy to care for! Leaflet will be provided but heres the basics..
On the very rare occasion that you may wish to wash your felted slippers, gently handwash in handwarm water, with either woolwash or mild shampoo in. Rinse in same temperature water. Short SPIN ONLY in washing machine. Pull them onto your feet while wet to reshape them. Dry naturally. Do not dry them too quickly (i.e. by sitting them over a woodburning stove / cooker) as this may harm the leather soles.
NOT SUITABLE for washing machine/tumble drier! They shouldn't shrink further, but they may well become mishapen and also it would not be good for the fastners or soles.. so please please dont do it.
