Camellias are a common motif in Asian imagery. The Chinese consider camellias to be symbols of luck during New Years. To the Japanese it represents the short life lived in glory spirit of the samurai and is often used in tea ceremonies as it has no scent to interfere with the tea. As opposed to most flowers, which lose their petals, the entire blossom of a camellia falls off and the distinctive sound of it hitting the ground is associated with spring.
