The main bead and findings are silver colored and the larger beads are clear for an icy cool feeling. I also used pale seed beads for a small amount of accent color. The earrings hang 2 1/2 inches long.
You are looking at handmade earrings. Buying these you are not supporting a large box store. You are supporting a musician/crafter artist in the American Midwest. I enjoy making them and have donated several pairs to local charities such as an animal sanctuary -Summerfield Zoo.
Many people have bought them as gifts..
I include a small gift bag (pictured) but please note the sticker I use varies :)
How I started with porcupine quills----
I spent the summer in Alaska and while there I house sat for a bush pilot. I acquired some porcupine quills and started experimenting. I had admired the quill earrings made by the Athabascans but this design is my own. Yes I stuck my fingers. The biggest surprise was when I first started. I was in the Alaskan Interior and up on a mountain or ridge as they called it. I was all alone with two large hunting dogs. As was custom I left the door open so the dogs could come and go. I spread out my jewelry equipment and started to work. Then one of the dogs, Ilsa, came charging into the house sniffing furiously. She went up to the loft and down to the garden level all the whole frantically sniffing. I thought "oh no what got into the house?" I grew up in the Midwest. When I waited out in the country for my school bus the cows stared at me and I stared back. We did not have bears, or mountain lions, or anything that might want to eat us. Even though this was not my first time there I still got a little skittish about not being on the top of the food chain. Well, eventually Ilsa came and stared at me. And then the quills. And then me again. Oh. A conversation later with her owner and I learned that Ilsa hates porcupines. Really really hates them. I made a note to myself to store my creations somewhere where she could not destroy them. Since apparently porcupines in her opinion were minions of Satan. Haha
Thanks for looking :)
