Full-page gravure art plate by The Gravure Company of America, Copyright, 1907-Bureau of National Literature and Art. Collector's antique 1907 historical gravure art print of 'President U. S. Grant'. The book is numbered "4015" . Official portrait of President Grant as it hangs in the White House today. Opposite each illustration when in the book was a historical review of the life and administration of President, this page is included. Biography was written by Shelby M. Cullom.
Gravure printing is a very special process when an image is etched on the surface of a metal plate , the etched area is filled with ink, and the plate then transfers the image to the paper or other material. Due to the high cost of this printing process it is seldom used today . The print is on a thick cardboard stock paper and the biography is on thinner paper. The image size is around 8" X 12", the sheets measure 16" X 19.50" . I did not trim the sheets once the book was unbound, do so if you chose but they are complete now as they were when printed.
This impressive print was originally painted by LeClaire. This plate originates from the White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents folio book. An exceptional art print, in black sepia hues, very high quality, classic print, ready to mat and frame. Attached biography page has a lovely black & white illustrated letter at top.
Art print excellent condition, bright & clean. Print border & back of print some light yellowing, and some spotting, must be common because all the other like prints cut the borders off the pictures for display. I will not hide such small defects, they are after all 106 years old. Edge wear obvious on text page but print pages were slightly smaller so they were not so effected. Even so after matting and framing will not be visable . High quality stand alone print. The color of the paper looks whiter than it is; it is more of an off white color.
Also none of the others mention the water mark pictures on text pages, each page has 2 pictures. One at the bottom and on on the right side of text. Strange that such details omitted in discriptions.
The bottom watermark picture shows the small tear in the binding and the side picture shows edge wear. Corner wear on bottom left text, bottom right print.
