"Keep the joy of loving the poor and share this joy with all you meet. Remember works of love are works of Peace. God Bless you."
I painted Mother Teresa because she was an inspiration to so many people. Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born on August 26, 1910. She was the youngest of three children. She took her first vows as a nun in 1931, taking the name Teresa after Thérèse de Lisieux - the patron saint of missionaries.
In 1946, Mother Teresa left the convent and dedicated her life to helping the poor. Three years later, the Vatican allowed her to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charities”. What began with 13 members in Calcutta now has more than 5,000 members running charity centers worldwide. By the 1970s Mother Teresa gained internationally famed as a humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless. She received numerous awards including the Nobel Peace Prize, the Balzan Prize (India’s highest civilian honor), and the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize.
Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997. Following her death she was beautified by Pope John Paul II and given the title “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.”
