What is sumi-e?
Sumi-e is inkwash brush painting originating from China over a thousand years ago, and embraced enthusiastically in Japan, Korea and now internationally. The name sumi-e literally means water+ink+painting. It is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its soul. East Asian ink wash painting may be regarded as an earliest form of expressionistic art that captures the unseen.
The essence is to convey with the least possible strokes. Once a stroke is painted, it cannot be changed or erased. This makes sumi-e a technically demanding art-form requiring great skill, concentration, and years of training.
I love to leave ample white space in my Chinese ink wash paintings so as not to distract, as well as to allow room for the viewer's own imagination. This stems from the Taoist line of thinking - sometimes not doing anything is action in itself. My style is that of "follow the heart" and "go with the natural flow", which also reflects the way I live.
Purchase of this original art does not include the right to reproduce it in any form for commercial use.
