The base of the figurine reads
The Legendary Princesses
(c) Lenox 1989"
Juliet was the daughter in the family Capulet. The family was rivals with the Montagues (whom Romeo was). Juliet was betrothed to Paris but was was in love with Romeo. This tragedy became the basis for Shakespeare's famous play, Romeo and Juliet, written early in his career. The two young star-crossed lovers' deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.
