Miser bags were popular starting around 1810, and were used by both men and women early on, carried in a pocket or displayed over a belt. Ladies magazines of the Victorian era include many patterns for miser bags and they continued in use until the 1920's when women's clothing styles changed dramatically. Miser bags have a small slit opening in the center, the closure rings are pushed to the side to allow access to the contents.
This would be a wonderful, accurate accessory for the living historian or vintage clothing enthusiast.
