This wonderful upcycled blank blank book is a treasure I found at our local library's annual book sale. Originally published in 1963, "Chris Plays Small Fry Football" is a fun story about a boy who wants to play football. Like so many children's books, especially ones from the library, this one had seen a great deal of wear. Although damaged, its obvious history made me fall in love with it, and want to attempt to repurpose it so that someone new could love it as much as its original readers did.
I've removed the damaged pages, and replaced them with crisp new acid-free light weight #50 unlined drawing paper. As the original writing was so much fun, I've included several of the more salvageable pages. I was also able to include a few of the untouched original illustrations. These original pages would make a great foundation for your own collage work, or you could use a bit of white gouache to create a space for your writings. Perhaps, you could let the bits of information inspire your own writings.
The book contains about 110 pages. Its bound in a traditional case-bound style, also known as edition bound or hard bound. This is the binding you find in pretty much any book you'd buy from the bookstore or check out of the library. I've used a modified library style stitch to make the book extra strong. I've used some really fun faux distressed paper that has a dark blue and brown geometric pattern for the new end-papers. I've also added a coordinating yellow and white striped silk ribbon to act as a bookmarker. The entire book measures 8 1\/4" long by 5 1\/2" wide by 3\/4" thick.
The orange vintage cover remains unchanged. The title and author are printed in a white text block on the spine. On the front cover, there's a great image of Chris playing small fry football. The title is printed in black above the picture. As is appropriate for a well-read book from childhood, the cover is lovingly worn. The edges are all fairly scuffed and the corners are bumped. There is some staining on both front and back covers. Also, the bottom spine has a faint "FJ" printed on it - that's the books Dewey Decimal identification.
The entire book has been reinforced on the inside to make it strong while still preserving its original appearance. The original title and author and artwork are all clear and clean, and the boards are solid. This is truly a one-of-a-kind book meant to inspire the artist in you.
