I created a herringbone (or ndebele) rope in striped silver-lined crystal and brown Czech seed beads. The fins are alternately made of peyote strips of the same beads, and handmade (by me!) strips of polymer clay. The polymer clay strips are striped with sienna and a silvery translucent color. These strips are flexible (not brittle), but should still be treated with care and not over-extended. A circular peyote toggle and loop make up the closure for this necklace. The closure is easy to fasten and unfasten, yet secure when closed.
The necklace is 17 1/2 inches (45 cm) around when closed, and the fins hang up to 3 3/4 inches (9 cm) long. The fins are approximately 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) wide.
This necklace was created for the Etsy Beadweaver's February 2009 challenge, themed 'Tropical Holiday.' As I grew up in Kenya, LIFE was tropical (after all, what's more tropical than the equator, which we crossed going between home and school). Every year, my family would spend nearly two weeks at cottages on the coast near Mombasa. A fringing reef was literally right outside the front door, and we spent many happy hours exploring and snorkeling. It was always a delight to see scorpion fish, though we definitely had a healthy respect for their poison!
