The night had brought pouring tropical rain, and in the morning light before the heat of the day, the flowers sparkled with diamond points of light. Orchids in a dozen colors and varieties reflected each other in the fat droplets that gathered on the underside of the petals. Whoever coined the phrase "tropical paradise" must have had orchids on his mind.

During the winter of 2005-06, my family and I spent three months in Papua New Guinea, where I grew up. It was special to me to visit old haunts and see them through adult eyes, and the artist in me found plenty of creative inspiration to keep me warm during winter nights back home in Canada.

This original watercolor painting was created in 2008 using artist quality paint and watercolor paper and measures 14 x 20 inches. Ships flat, insured.
