Back in the day when it took months or years to travel to another country and a person might not return in one piece, if ever, it was such a big deal to travel to the Holy Land and walk in the path of Jesus on His way to Calgary that the Catholic Church gave a full indulgence (which means you can go straight to heaven without doing any Purgatory time) for anyone who made the trip.

That was great for the young, the healthy and the rich, but the rest of us poor slobs were out of indulgence luck when it came to the Stations of the Cross. Our dear St. Francis of Assisi invented the idea of a portable Stations of the Cross for the rest of us.
