It’s spring, and we’re gearing up for cycling. When I was practicing my calligraphy one day, I decided that it would be fun to do a calligraphy cyclist for my husband’s birthday. He loved it! The strokes aren’t quite traditional (the wheels are like the Zen circle, the enso), but their energy bring the cyclist to life.

Why so many to choose from? Well, I practice a lot (believe me, these are only a few of the many), and I couldn’t choose a favorite. My family all chose different favorites. Each “picture” looks like a different cyclist on a different bicycle. So I went with it, and put different chops on all of the favorites.

This cyclist is accompanied by my hand carved chop “clear open flow”. I’ve also included the 6 x 8 inch kanji character “no” (which means ride) written in semi-cursive gyosho.

The painting and calligraphy come unframed, but I want to show how I like to display them together in a frame that pairs group and individual photos: an 8 x 10 rectangle and a 5 x 7 oval. (The photos are examples with similar artwork.) This frame and mat set is commonly used to show a group photo plus an individual photo (class & child or team & player). I've purchased them from Michael's, and they are very reasonable. You can very easily pop the bike painting and the calligraphy into place, and the whole thing looks very professional.

I use traditional Japanese tools: liquid sumi or bokuju (ink) , Japanese fude (brush), and kami (paper). The paintings are on Japanese rice paper (which really isn't made of rice) and backed with card stock. The paintings are enclosed in a plastic page protector for safe shipping. All materials are acid-free.

The go (signature) I use is one kanji for ME and means bud, sprout, or shoot, and reminds me that “I’m good to grow”.
