Horus Spreads His Wings: standing on a dock, his wings spread to catch the rays of the morning sun, the god Horus embodies the timeless spirit of the Nile. The son of Isis and Osiris, Horus was well known in the myths of Ancient Egypt. He was a god of the sky whose eyes were the sun and the moon, and also a god of victory. The pharaoh was said to be the Living Horus, the god come to earth. Horus was associated with the falcon or hawk, and was most often shown as either a falcon or a man with the head of a falcon.
This art quilt was completely designed and made by Donna. She drew the design, then hand appliqued the center section. The details on the wings, the wig and the collar were thread painted in rayon and metallic threads. A pieced border in the traditional flying geese pattern makes a frame around the center. It was layered with batting and a cotton lining and quilted. Both the thread painting and the quilting were done by Donna on a basic sewing machine, guiding each stitch by hand. No computerized patterns were used. Cotton bias tape, hand-stitched around the edge, finishes the quilt.
This is a one of a kind piece. There will never be another like it.
