Cotton was designed and made for an invitational show at the Tubac Art Center in Arizona. The title of the show was Wrapped in Cloth -- The Human Figure in Textile. If you look closely at the pictures you can see the human figures. The quilt is made entirely from cotton, and the fabrics are all hand dyed. The technique is based on Hawaiian applique, although the subject matter is endemic to Arizona. Randolph was an entirely African-American town just outside of Coolidge. In the 30's Randolph was created to be a home to the small community of share croppers that were brought in from Mississippi to work the anticipated bumper crop of Pima Cotton. No black person was allowed into the town of Coolidge after dark by law until the 50's and the schools weren't integrated until the 60's Civil Rights laws made it non-negotiable. I wanted to show the incredible beauty of the blooming cotton fields with their delicate pink flowers and the soft white heads of cotton. I wanted also to "surprise" the close viewer with the strength and beauty of the people that planted, worked, and harvested that cotton. Cotton is 7 feet square and has a sleeve at the top and bottom of the quilt to facilitate hanging.
