---ALTERNATIVES is a rag rug pattern of my own devising that involves weaving with two opposing shuttles at the same time. The result is a rug with narrow, neat stripes running the width of the rug. In this case, solid black stripes alternate with a print fabric of black dots on a white background.
I have added a laid-in diagonal pattern using strips of bright rainbow fabric. This diagonal pattern is subtle, but still manages to add a bit of "spice" to the rug.
Laying-in is an early American weaving technique. Early American weavers did not have access to the wealth of warp colors that we have today and that we can use to create patterns in our rugs. Some early American weavers used small pieces of contrasting yarn or fabric and "laid" them across the weft to form patterns and pictures.
The warp strings, which form additional stripes running the length of the rug, are black, grey and white and end in fringe of the same shades.
Put together, the ALTERNATIVES pattern, the laid-in strips and the warp stripe pattern all add up to a very interesting and definitely one of a kind rug that will fit in anywhere, from a traditional room to an industrial modern loft.
Just a note: The diagonal laid-in rainbow apparently is too subtle for my camera to pick up clearly in my main photo. I have included the photo of the full rug so you would have some reference as to size but added a closer photo that shows the diagonal rainbow detail against the alternating horizontal stripes that gives a better representation of the rug as a whole. There are four diagonal stripes in the overall rug.
