This little doll is the Archangel Michael, defender of mankind. His holy day is celebrated on Sept. 29th. St. Michael is the archangel who threw the devil out of heaven and is usually seen with his foot on the defeated dragon.
Michaelmas is often celebrated in Waldorf schools as us learning to defeat our own dragons, with stories of St. Michael, St. George, making and eating our own "dragon" bread.
St. Michael wears his traditional costume of a Roman soldier - a blue silk tunic, red silk cape, silver breastplate, and Roman sandals. His wings spread out majestically behind him. Sword is not included.
All of my dolls are handmade wire-wrapped dolls. I wrap them with cotton floss which has a lovely sheen and does not pill with age. They are usually about 3 inches tall and fully pose-able. Each are one-of-a-kind. I use natural wood beads for their head and try to incorporate natural items, like acorn caps, nuts or feathers when I have them.
In Waldorf tradition facial features and expressions are left up to his companion's mood.
****5 and up. These dolls are not for young children as they have small pieces and can be a choking hazard. If you have any doubts about whether or not your child will want to munch on and decapitate the poor little things, wait a year or two before you purchase one. Headless fairies are not nice fairies.
