A woven or tied "dolly" or talisman made from the last shelf of wheat at harvest provided a home for the spirit of the field, to be kept safe in the home until planting in the spring.
In modern times wheat weavings of corn dollies have come to represent blessings and abundance, in a more general sense.
My whirligig measures 17 inches by 16 inches.
Wheat weavings appear fragile, but last very well. I have the first ones I made almost 30 years ago. They can be dusted with a feather, or for more figorous cleaning, can be swished in light suds, rinsed and dried in it's original shape.
