Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, Blondie, and The Cars all used synths to one extent or another, and I was hooked on the unique sounds I was hearing.
Thumbing through an electronics store's catalog one day, I came across their version of a Moog synthesizer. It was expensive, but still somewhat affordable. I read and re read the paragraphs describing what it could do, and stared longingly at the photo of it for quite a few months. I knew I just had to have it!
Finally, I broached the subject with my mother while at the mall one day.
She agreed to take a look at it with me, so in we went to the electronics store. The salesman inside was quite convincing, and demonstrated the various sounds you could get out of the thing. I had a grin from ear to ear.
My mother was always willing to spend money on anything musical for me, so out came the checkbook. I was thrilled to say the least!
30 years later, and I STILL have that same synth. Every now and then, I will plug it in and experiment with it when I record. It smokes a bit when you turn it on, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't - but I still love it.
So, as I continue to mine my childhood in pursuit of yet another art project, (and I DO consider my 'Felty Things' to be little works of art) what better subject to model in felt, than my beloved synth of days gone by?
Adhered to the back of this felty synth is a magnet, allowing decoration of fridges and lockers everywhere!
