Handmade from a recycled vinyl record, the Hot Pink pinwheel is painted with acrylics in my original design.
The painted record is sliced and shaped into a pinwheel design, then mounted onto a silver-painted steel rod, and finished with a painted wood knob.
Engineered with a precision bearing at the center of the record, this colorful piece of outdoor art will turn and spin with just a little bit of breeze, and it will continue spinning for a surprisingly long time! Mesmerizing!

A little more info:
The pinwheels are designed to go outdoors. Just stick it into the ground and enjoy! They will turn and spin in the wind and provide a beautiful, colorful decoration for your outdoor space. (They make cool shadows too!)
I recommend that you keep them in shade or partial shade on really hot days, because we all know what happens when records get left out in the hot sun! Depending on how hot it gets where you live, you might want to just make sure they aren't exposed to super extreme temperatures.
The pinwheels have been coated with polyurethane to help protect the painting as well as the original record label, which is still visible on the back of each piece.
They will hold up fabulously in the wind and rain, as I can tell you since I have a whole lollipop crop of them in my yard, and I live in the wet, wet Pacific Northwest (Portland, Oregon). They are doing great and never cease to put a smile on my face, especially when I see them spinning!
The pinwheels are about 12" in diameter (30.48 cm) and about 3' tall (91.44 cm) from the top of the spinner to the bottom of the metal stake.
Because of the length of the metal stake, your pinwheel must be shipped UNASSEMBLED. Don't worry, it's really easy to put it together. You will receive clearly written instructions and all the parts necessary to get your pinwheel spinning like a dream.

{{ HISTORY }}
Mandala Pinwheels were originally created in collaboration with my friend Anitra Cameron (please visit her Etsy shop, coffeepotpeople.etsy.com).
The first batch of pinwheels was designed for Live Debris 2009, a traveling series of events and installations dedicated to sharing and establishing new reuse traditions as a way of reducing stigmas around garbage, poverty and street culture. (More info at http://redsemillaroja.org.)
These first pinwheels were installed on the Eastbank Esplanade along the Willamette River waterfront in Portland, OR for the Live Debris event.
See my blog for the whole story, and photos of the Live Debris installation: http://eyepopart.blogspot.com/2009/09/psychedelic-city-pinwheels-at-live.html

When I was contacted by the catalog company Uncommon Goods, I knew I needed to step the product up a notch in order to make them spin the way that I wanted them to spin. So I started working with Mad Dog, who modified the design with new moving parts for the best quality spinning action. The addition of a precision bearing mounted at the pinwheel center has done wonders to improve product longevity, ease of rotation and smoother operation of wheel.
Mad Dog continues to help me produce the pinwheels. He does material rough fabrication, bearing mounting and some limited pre-painting.
I'm happy to say that the pinwheels were picked up by Uncommon Goods! Three exclusive designs (Rainbow, Green, and Violet) are available in their Summer 2010 catalog, and on their website at http://www.uncommongoods.com/item/item.jsp?source=family&itemId=18918
