Joss paper is a ceremonial paper burned during religious ceremonies to pay respect to the ancestors in China and other parts of Asia. In the Western world, Joss paper is frequently used for collage, altered art and Feng Shui.
Joss paper is thin, textured, bamboo or rice paper, often with metallic gold or silver leaf. There are two main types of joss paper: one type has a square metallic leaf in the center of the page. The gold metallic leaf has orange coloring that makes the metal leaf appear as gold. The second type has two pieces of metallic leaf on opposite ends of the page. One side has the orange coloring that makes the metal leaf appear gold while the other side is left uncolored so that the leaf is silver in color.
