About these works:
These images, which form a triptych, explore layers of the feminine psyche through sociological and historical reference. Through her internal turmoil of adapting to social expectations whilst remaining true to her modern self, these issues and experiences create rich tapestries that she carries within. She is the sum of her experiences that form her psychological makeup - A warp and weft of emotions, intellect, desire, spiritual beliefs, sociological and historical expectations and precedents. All of these have profound influence on a women’s psyche and what is considered intrinsically feminine.
Here, through the use of the Rose with their layered images and textures, treated with vintage styling, I indicate the process of a woman’s development over time, expressing the complexities of melding these within her own psyche and strengthening her own inner being. She is ever-changing and growing through her experiences; in the foreground reflective and yet complexly innate, slowly blossoming - yet there is also the future in the distance - in which she still will have to journey down and further develop her state of being; mind, body and soul – the path not yet travelled.
Symbolism in these images:
Rose:
The rose has always been valued for its beauty and has a long history of symbolism.
Roses are ancient symbols of love and beauty. The rose was sacred to a number of goddesses (including Isis and Aphrodite). The ancient Greeks and Romans identified the rose with their goddesses of love referred to as Aphrodite and Venus.
The rose in these images act as a vehicle of the feminine psyche represented through the many layers of the blooming and delicate petals. The rose, like womanhood goes through many stages of transformation.
I use the rose in my art work as a vehicle for the feminine.
Wrought Iron/flower bouquet/ pleated fan:
Structure and embellishments. The flowers, wild and feminine yet contained within the confines of the structured bouquet. The strength and support of the wrought iron table designed complete with nature’s embellishments; the pleats from a skirt or hand fan - again accentuating all that is considered attractive and feminine yet in a controlled social fashion. The opposites’ of these elements demonstrative the internal push and pull of social and historical expectations for what is considered feminine and yet possessing the strength and fortitude to endure extreme experiences and conditions.
Corset/Art Nouveau Cameo:
The corset is heavily embellished to accentuate a woman’s figure and voluptuousness of a perfect hourglass- the ideal of social expectation. The Art Nouveau Cameo, with her long flowing hair, focuses on vanity, further demonstrating the historical precedence of what is inbred into a woman’s psyche of youth beauty and femininity. Art Nouveau is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly-stylized, flowing curvilinear forms. This style quintessentially stamped into our minds to form all that is considered intrinsically feminine.
Teacup/Birds/Spring Blossom:
The Fine bone china symbolises social fineries and pleasantries; spring blossoms and birds represent the ‘spring” of a woman’s grace or stage in life – the stage which is considered to be the most desirable or feminine of our physical being. The spring blossoms and birds also represent birth/rebirth – distinctly female traits and the tea cup representing the nurturing/containing qualities that are also innately feminine.
The aim in my art work is to bypass a verbal dialogue and communicate directly with the viewer’s subconscious. I hope you enjoy and can perhaps relate to my art as I share with you part of what is intrinsic to each and every one of us within on some level.
