Artist Statement
The girls I paint are really fictional portraits inspired by the special and fleeting innocence of girlhood. They are daughters, nieces, sisters, friends, twins and cousins.
As I work on and complete each painting, I am struck by how similar this process is to my life in general. Starting with imperfect wood (we are imperfect as people), and using a wide variety of materials and techniques (work, relationships, art), we can transform the imperfection into something beautiful. It also reminds me how I want to approach my life: when I get stuck or am afraid that I'll "ruin" a painting, I remind myself that this is MY PAINTING / MY LIFE: I can put in it whatever I want.
