For thousands of years, the weathervane has provided a functional and beautiful way to tell which way the wind blows .
Collectors seek out weathervanes and wind vanes based on several criteria. The subject matter of the weathervane can be of interest to a collector especially if the design incorporates an element of movement. This does not refer to the normal movement of the vane as it turns in the wind. Movement usually refers to design elements that enhance the piece. The images of a galloping horse, a soaring bird, or a crowing rooster suggest movement in the piece.
Here is a Antique Copper Horse , from a weathervane , that I purchased at an Esate Sale in New York . In a galloping pose ,this patina 3 dimensional piece measures 26 inches long x 14 inches tall. Theres a hole on the leg where the horse was mounted. In used condition hence the bumps & bruises, Was told by the owners granddaughter that the owner had it on top of his barn since her mother was a young girl so I estimate it to be at least 100 years old .
Cleaning can remove or mar valuable patinas, oxides, paints and other elements that can help to establish the age of the weathervane so cleaning is NOt recommended .
Unique details are the lines in the horses mane , upright ears, galloping pose and the emphasize on the muscles of the horse.
A true piece of Americana Craftmanship. Additional photos available .
