In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me...."
While it is unclear to whom the character Annabel Lee is referring, biographers often interpret that "Annabel Lee" was written for Poe's wife Virginia, who had died two years prior, as was suggested by poet Frances Sargent Osgood . A strong case can be made for Poe's wife Virginia: she was the one he loved as a child, and the only one that had been his bride, and the only one that had died, therefore I took this as inspiration in creating this character.
This character is inspired by the only known "portrait" of Virginia Clem Poe. She is wearing an all white dress trimmed in delicate white lace, and her dark hair is sleeked on the sides with a chignon in back. A black lace shawl completes her look.
"Annabel Lee" stands a petite four and a half inches tall, (11.4 cm) a must have for any Poe fan!
