An item like this takes from 15 to 18 days elapsed time to complete, and between 4 and 5 hours actual work time. After carving the shape, I start the finishing process by sanding with 80 grit paper. I then soak it for two or three hours in hot water. After drying (usually over night), I then sand with 120 grit paper and soak in hot water again. That process continues through eight grits of sandpaper -
80 / 120 / 220 / 320 / 400 / 600 / 800 / 1200.
After sanding with the 1200 grit paper, I then apply a coat of mineral oil (purchased in my local drug store). This considerably darkens the wood to a deep red, and brings out the beautiful cherry wood grain. After the mineral oil adsorbs into the wood, I sand again with 1200 grit paper. There are a total of 3 mineral oil / sanding applications.
The final step in the process is to apply three coats of beeswax which completes this functional work of art!!
Care Instructions
To clean after use, you can wash in soap and water, but just do not soak them in dishwater, and do not put them in the dishwasher. After a few months of use, they may lose their luster, but can be simply restored by applying a thin coat of mineral oil
