Originally, Melody (my American Girl Doll) and I thought this dress should be pretty, with enough alterations from the normal to make it distinctive (it is a Melody Valerie Couture Original, after all!) But when I went fabric shopping, all that changed. Pretty became Stunning, and a beautiful holiday dress was born.
It all began with the fabric that makes up the full skirt, perky cuffs, daring bow and sash, and tiny mandarin collar. It’s copper one way and black the other, so as it catches the light, the color is constantly changing. The effect is festive, yet refined, not to mention breathtaking. To accompany this fabric, I chose pure white silk duppioni. The crispy, nubbly texture of the tailored bodice and sleeves contrasts beautifully with that of the skirt. And when I found tiny, sparkly buttons, I knew they were the perfect finishing touch for the cuffs.
Lovely as the outside is, however, the interior looks just as good. We lined the bodice with smooth white cotton, and finished all the exposed raw edges. The dress closes up the back with an invisible zipper (Melody and I both hate watching a dress die slowly at the hands of its own Velcro).
