The “stone” in this piece is made from layers of automotive paint, upcycled (by a talented lapidary artist in the UK) through refining and polishing to expose the cross sections of layers…The stone comes from slag created by overspray during the painting process…The slag for this piece originated in the 1970’s, from the Dagenham Ford plant in the UK… Fordite is considered to be fairly rare as car bodies are no longer spray painted, so the source of the slag no longer exists.
Each piece of Fordite is one of a kind, which makes the finished piece of of a kind as well.

I set this piece in a handmade bezel of sterling silver, set atop a sterling silver disk... The disk measures approx 1" in diameter. The functional ring portion is also solid sterling silver, measuring a smidgen over 1" in diameter. The sterling is darkened with a hand applied patina and brushed to a dark, industrial sheen.
SAFETY NOTE: As of 2002 over 50% of automotive paint being produced had lead in it. As this "Fordite" is from the 1970's it most likely has some amount of lead in the layers of paint. The sterling silver setting is lead free. My designs are not intended for use by children.
