I have heard this puppet called many things...but my favorite is "the Pickle Monster"!
This shadow puppet has arms that move up and down by pulling a wire handle. He measures 17" tall and 10.5" wide (when yelling).
All my shadow puppets are laser cut from matboard (this is the sturdy, thick board used for picture framing). I feel this material allows me to make more delicate designs that can still hold up as a toy for children or adults!
The puppets are all designed with moving parts, so the mermaid "swims", the T-rex "roars" and the Toothfairy "can fly". I now use a pop-fastener for the puppet joints which is made from recycled plastic-- this fastener is safer for children because it cannot come undone once the puppet is assembled.
Because my puppets have sticks and wires, I would not recommend them for children under 4, and always under parent supervision.
Also, I have found that the multi-jointed puppets (Mermaid, seamonster, T-rex, and diplo) are the most satisfying for young performers. These designs are the most intuitive to operate with a stick in each hand.
