Antique Victorian Locket. Large. Crescent Moon. Bates.

Exceptionally uncommon large round locket in a most uncommon asymmetric design. A woman with a knowing expression, high lace collar and upswept locks emerging from a jeweled crescent moon. Behind her are rows of tooled flowers. Locket opens to reveal the domed back of the design, and a round frame for a picture. Signature inside the frame reads Bates&B, Best Quality. The locket is a perfect circle, 1.25" in diameter / 3.5 cm.

The Bates and Bacon Company was formed in Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1856, and made jewelry through the early 40s. This is from their earliest years.

In good vintage condition with a single stone missing, the lowest stone in the crescent. I believe this is a gold fill piece, the color is warm, the color of patinaed brass. Light spots of patina and tiny dents. All visible in photos.
