Bird of the iridescent feathers and croaking call, the raven is the supernatural messenger, the "ebony bird" in Poe's poem. A tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, whose birthday is January 19. Apparently, Dickens's pet raven Grip inspired Poe to write his poem.
My mosaic version: I cut the bird from a slab of vintage lace-printed terracotta, colored it with engobe, fired it once and finally waxed it. I upcycled some earthenware plates found in a second hand shop to make the tesserae which I hand cut to fit. All pieces are mounted on a wood base, grouted in gray.
Measurements: 6" x 3.75" x 0.5" (15 x 10 x 1.3 cm)
Wire on the back for immediate hanging.
