Glass Octopus sculpture by Ron Murphy.

This Octopus art Sculpture has very realistic eyes made with a special process called Murrine.

After studying more about using glass color I came across an article on and ancient process of making Murrine (common pluralization murrini) is an Italian term for colored patterns or images made in a glass cane (long rods of glass) that are revealed when cut in cross-sections. Murrine can be made in infinite designs—some styles are more familiar, such as millefiori. However I used the process to make realistic animal eyes!

The octopus is about 3-1/2 inches long, 3 inches wide

I have been observing them in various Aquariums. Denver Aquarium has a very nice octopus at the end of the aquarium tour, and I spent some time there studying this very colorful octopus!

At times I look at them on the internet and trying to get ideas for inspiration for sculpting them in glass.

Photos of them or acquire pictures are very useful to me for getting a mental idea of the direction that I want to go with my sculpture. Then the process begins of using various forms of glass and colors to try to grasp the ideas and to get them to their final shape and color. It may take me a number of tries before I get one to come out successful.

Most items are a one of a kind. However we re-list some items so they may not be the originals. You probably won't be able to tell much difference between yours and the one pictured. Just be aware that small variations can occur with original art.
