Prairie II an original watercolor painting

This painting was painted in celebration of the University of Wisconsin Arboretum 75th anniversary in 2009. It explores prairie flora that is or used to be plentiful in southern Wisconsin. I imagine the plentiful prairie I'd like to see again. Its a large enough image that you can feel yourself surrounded by flowers, butterflies, and bees. With so many wetlands disturbed there are fewer wild Lupine and fewer of the Karner Butterflies that depend on them for food and a place to grow their larva. I've taken a few liberties with which plants bloom together but that is the artist's prerogative. This is one of a series of paintings in which I imagine the abundance we desire.
