This is a beautiful first edition hand coloured print from Sowerby's English Botany. James Sowerby was born in London. He decided to become a painter of flowers. His first venture was with William Curtis whose Flora Londinensis he illustrated. Sowerby studied art at the Royal Academy and took an apprenticeship with Richard Wright.
In 1790 he began the first of several huge projects, a 36 volume work on the botany of England which was to be published over the next 24 years. It contained 2592 hand coloured engravings and became known as Sowerby's Botany.
The condition of the print is excellent. There is some very faint foxing. The hand colouring is vibrant. The paper is thick and cream in colour. The print measures approximately 5 3/4" x 9 1/4".
This is an ORIGINAL antique print. A copy of the title page is included in the listing. A page of descriptive text is included.
