Icons of Mary are particularly treasured and beloved. Next to her is child Jesus.Mary is considered the wisest, most beautiful, most loving, most spiritually evolved of all humans. She is cherished as a source of calm, shelter, serenity,understanding, and mercy.
Mary is depicted as a high-ranking Byzantine lady, modestly wrapped in a reddish-purple shawl of fine lightweight wool with gold trim and fringes. The "Stars of Perfection" on her head and shoulders are symbolic of her purity.
In Orthodox icons, her head is covered and her hair does not show. She holds the Christ Child on her left side, close to her heart.
ABOUT THE TECHNIQUE:
This exquisite piece is created in the canon of ortodox icons painting.
I painted the icon on a wooden panel with a stucco canvas on top. I used water based paint (tempera) for the figures and a gold leaf for the background. The image is well sealed with a couple of transparent varnish layers so that the colors are crispier and also to allow the icon to be cleaned from dust easily. The back of the icon is varnished in darker tone. There is metal ring on top for easy hanging.
The size of the icon is 11.5" by 15.7" (29,3/40 cm)and 0.7" deep(1.7cm)
