This unique handmade tile measures approximately 2" wide x 3 7/8" long, varying slightly due to its handmade nature. The finely carved details depict the NYS fossil, Eurypterus. I've used an underglaze black to highlight the details, and after wiping off the excess, I glazed the whole tile a lovely forest green crackle.
I carved the tile in wax, poured a plaster mould, pressed the tile into a slab of porcelain clay with my homemade hand press, fired, glazed, and refired it.
This was a custom tile designed for a retired NYS Earth Science teacher - I'll post photos of it in her backsplash as soon as it's set. If you'd like to see the process in action, you can see it here -
