This particular necklace is hand-crocheted and wire wrapped with crafting wire in my own original design. The clasp in the back is also handmade and created with wire wrapped sea glass pieces. The necklace fits close to the neck like a choker and the wire is pliable and easy to manipulate to 'mold' into position.
This choker necklace is done in several shades of genuine green sea glass. This one measures approx. 19 inches long and about 6 inches in diameter when clasped. There are 16 genuine sea glass pieces. (Including the one used in creating the clasp.)Each of the pieces are approx. 1 in in length by 0.5 inch in width. Each of the 16 pieces are individually wire-wrapped and then hand crocheted or wire knit into the form of the necklace.
I didn't want to drill the sea glass, so I wire-wrapped each one to keep the glass in as natural a form as possible. I also thought that the wire knit necklace added a glow to the glass and made the glass look like it was caught or wrapped in a net.
The sea glass is genuine found sea glass from Kelleys Island. (A small island in Lake Erie.) Over the many years that my grandmother lived on the island, she collected a large amount of these wonderful treasures and I wanted to use them to make something unique and memorable. With more and more items being packaged in plastic, it is increasingly difficult to find genuine sea glass frosted and smoothed by the sea.
