I got it in the 1970s in a connecticut estate sale of a woman named Brearley Frances Royal.
It says MADE IN U.S.A. on some caps. It has varying color Aquas, Celedon and light Blues in a rich Enamel Guilloche' Finish on Brass colored metal.
Guilloché refers to a process.
Guilloché is not a type of enamel, Enamel is applied on top of the metal patterning.
Guilloché, phonetically pronounced gee-oh-SHAY, comes from the French and means "engine-turning."
Guilloché refers to a series of patterns.
Guilloché patterns can be found in architecture and banknotes.
When used in Vanity items and jewelry making, guilloché patterns are carved into a base metal.
Machine types used to create guilloché patterns include the rose engine and geometric lathe.
Machines used to create guilloché patterns are no longer manufactured.
Modern producers do not create guilloché except a few very expensive watch makers!
This listing has 11 ( eleven) pieces of Guilloche' besides the leather carrying case.
There are 3 rectangular fluted glass cologne/ perfume jars ( 3 1/2" high by 2 3/4" wide by 1 3/4" deep ) each has a clean under cap with a hole in the middle to shake out the liquids and seems to be inserted down the mouth of the bottle. The screw tops are celedon colored enamel on the guilloche pattern.( One is slightly darker celedon) They are all Brass finished caps. All 3 are imprinted with Made in U.S.A. In the caps are cork discs covered with a silver paper?. These 3 have their own little brass platform under each one, inside the case.
There are 2 Round Fluted Glass jars for Powder, cream? guessing. Each is 3" high by 2 1/2" in Diameter. There is a fitted brass platform for each in the case . One jar is missing there was room for 3 of these. The Screw tops are 2 different colored enamel on the GUILLOCHE pattern. One jar is celedon and one is a brighter celedon green. Both round top jars are starting to spread at the seam bottom of the metal screw top, about 1/32" or less. There is some slight foxing on the side of the screw top that is brighter (Round jar) The celedon round hs a little teny bit of fox at the top where the enamel start. teeny tiny!.Brass is stamped MADE in U.S.A. on both.
The same brighter celedon green enamel color is also on a HAT PIN JAR. . The glass jar is a tall 6 3/4" by 1 1/2" in diameter. I have been told that the hatpin jar is RARE for the Vanity sets. It looks very shiny and has the cork piece in the top screw cap. There is no fitting in the case for the hat pin jar even though it matches all the enamel guilloche' patterns ( All same pattern, differents green/aqua tones.) I guess the hatpin Jar is a substitute for the missing round powder or cream or hairpin jars.
piece 7 is the mirror with handle. It is12" long. The oval mirror part is 5 1/2' long and 4' wide. The enamel color is the bright blue. There is a little darkening in the mirroe face and there is slight foxing on the goldish brass..The metal has lovely deco design on both sides. the mirror back and the hnadle back are two slightly different shades and both are the enameled Guilloche' pattern. Snap place for it in case.
#8 is the handled hairbrush. It is 10" long . the oval is 4" long and 3' wide. it is a blond natural bristle on wood. Looks never used. No bristles are worn down or discolored. The enamel is bright blue like the mirror back. . The handle is slightly dull metal but I will cloth shine before shipping. It has the same metal deco design as mirror on front and back. There's a snap place for this in the leather carrying bag.
#9 is the shoe horn. metal parts are foxed with rust. The enamel guilloche is the bright blue turquoise, art deco design matches brush and mirror. There's a snap place for it inside the travel case.
#10 is the nail file, 2 sided. it has been used. metal is duller, file duller. no foxing. bright blue and matcheds the shoehorn, the mirror and the hairbrush. there's aplace for it in the travel case.
last, #11 is the comb holder, comb is missing. It is bright blue but all rusted inside and the metal around the enameled part is foxed and rust spots. The is is the one in bad condition but not broken and enamel guilloche is intact. It is 7" long. the place for it in the box is ripped away.
All this is the listing. 11 items plus case, in bad condition. One jar is missing and there's the tall hatpin jar as substitute though this is how I got it all!
7/10 reduced from 325 to 240
