This original abstract landscape is one of several paintings of Pedernal that I did as homage to the amazingly talented O’Keeffe, who continues to inspire me, no matter where I’m painting. This painting was the second painting in the Pedernal series to be accepted into a national, juried watercolor competition. (This piece was selected for The Art League of Hilton Head 2008 National Juried Show.)

This painting was done on location in Ghost Ranch near Abiqui, New Mexico – the exact spot where Georgia O’Keeffe spent so many years. It was my first visit to this part of the country, and I was mesmerized by the intense oranges and reds - colors that simply aren’t found in the New England landscape. Always in the distance loomed Pedernal, the distinctly shaped mountain that was one of O’Keeffe’s favorite subjects. (She once wrote: "God told me if I painted it enough, I could have it.")

This original painting is done on Yupo®, which is essentially a thin sheet of plastic (polypropylene). Unlike traditional watercolor papers, which absorb pigments, the slick surface of Yupo repels water. While you can lay down paint within broad outlines, the paint itself essentially takes over from there -- flowing and blending as it sees fit. Yupo is ideal for painting in a loose, fluid style and yields more vibrant colors than painting on paper, as all of the pigment remains on the surface. This 8” high by 11” wide painting is sold unframed. It is double-matted, with a thin, rust-color interior mat surrounded by a wider linen white mat. The mats are designed to fit into any ready-made 12 x 16 frame, so you can cost-effectively display this work in a frame of your own choosing.

Buying art online is a new experience for many people. While I put great time and effort into capturing the colors of my work as accurately as possible, computer screens differ. If, when you receive your painting in the mail, you are not as in love with it as you expected to be, I will refund your money in full (up to 30 days from delivery date).

If you have any questions at all please feel free to get in touch with me via the “contact the shop owner” link in blue below.
