The garnet itself is an angular little thing, and is deep purple-red in colour. Garnet is the birthstone of January.
The specimen is 7/8 inch across on its longest side. It is a tall piece, at almost 1/2" in height. I cut it myself from a larger specimen, and it is shaped like a triangle. The specimen has been subtly reinforced with epoxy. This will ensure that the schist does not become easily damaged.
It is firmly nestled in an organically-shaped sterling silver bezel. The bezel has undergone a number of surface treatments. First, the silver was given a rich, matte lustre with a steel brush. Next, I oxidized it to a deep, rich black. After that, I sanded back some of the areas with sandpaper, thus creating a multi-toned and somewhat industrial appearance. The final step was to put a coat of clear enamel on to ensure that the finish does not wear off.
The band of the ring is sterling silver, and is 1/4" wide. I used a steel brush to give it a matte lustre.
The specimen has not yet been set into place, so this ring can be sized to fit any finger. Once it is sized, the specimen will be set into the bezel with jeweler's epoxy. Then, the sterling silver bezel will be formed tight to the contours of the specimen.
