If you are like me, you need all the free gift and craft ideas you can get this year. I came up with this candle idea made from a Burger King New Moon Plastic Cup that I thought I would share with all the other TwiHards out there.
Initially I was just going to display my Burger King New Moon cup with my other Twilight memorabilia. However, my cat, Dermot, kept trying to knock it over in hopes of getting a drink, so I had to come up with an alternative. Plus, this just looks a little nicer than a plastic cup.
The picture is similar to the Burger King Cup design but not exact. My camera is giving me fits so I had to improvise.
1. I took a pair of scissors and cut the design band showing Edward, Bella, and Jacob (or as I like to call them, the Twilight Trinity) from the Burger King Plastic Cup. It was easy to decide where to cut down into the cup, because there is actually a seam in the design on the back of the cup where I could cut through the middle of the band. I removed all the white edges.
2. Next I found a clear glass container or jar that was similar to the size of the plastic band. You might have a juice glass this size or a highball glass. An empty Tostitos Queso or Salsa jar works perfectly as well. If the glass container is taller than the plastic band that is fine. If it is shorter, you may want to cut the band down a bit to prevent possible melting of the plastic.
3. I situated the band around the jar so that it overlapped at the ends of the band. The design works great if you overlap the Burger King Logo (which you don't care if you hide anyway).
4. Next I took out my trusty Glue Gun. I put it on the cool setting. The hot setting may work as well, but I was afraid of melting the plastic from the cup. I believe, rubber cement would work too, or clear packing tape if you are out of all those. I adjusted the band as tightly as I could around the glass and glued the overlapping ends to each other. You may want to hold this in place until it cools.
5. Place a tealight or votive candle in the glass container and light it it. Waaa Laaa! You have an expensive looking New Moon Candle for the price of your BK drink!
Helpful Hints and Other Design Ideas:
*You could also put a lid on the jar and use it as a decorative container or fun packaging for a small gift.
*Use only a glass container, plastic may melt.
*BK made some New Moon Paper Cups in other sizes too, but I would not advise using them with a candle.
*At first I used a juice glass with a criss cross design. When I lit the candle, the design showed thru. The plainer/clearer the glass container, the better.
*You could also cut out the individual characters (depending on what Team you are on). In that case, you would need to affix them directly to the glass.
*You may also want to attach it to a existing jar candle (Yankee or other brand).
*You can make the ring as big as you want and set a smaller votive holder in the middle of it, the look will be pretty much the same.
*Most Dollar Stores now have small flameless tealight candles you can switch on which give the same effect as a real candle.
*Always be careful with candles, matches, and lighters.
