The pattern for these low slung, long legged pants were specially designed for slim preschool aged girls and boys. Created for movement and comfort, the front waist sits low on the hips while the back curves up gently for modesty. The relaxed fit legs are adjustable to any length. Best of all, the pants are made from a single pattern piece, making a quick and easy sew that is infinitely modifiable.
I developed the Willow Wayfarer; Hipsters for Slimsters for my five year old daughter, who is not only thinner than the average child, but insists on wearing her waistband pushed down low on her hips (which, with a regular around the waist pants, looks not only awkward, but like her mama doesn’t know how to sew – no good!) Plus there was a small issue with indiscretion, with her pushed-down-waistband pants, every time she bent over to pick something up. Too many accidental peeks at the back end motivated me to come up with something better.
This is my solution. The Willow Wayfarer pants are made to be worn on the hips but come up slightly in the back to keep things modest. They fit slim or slightly built children approximately 2.5-6 years old (hip measurements 20" to 23"). The legs are easily adjustable in length, good for both smaller than average kids and the tall and thin ones. With one pattern piece to cut both sides of the pants, they are very quick to sew (could be as fast as 20 minutes).
Novice sewers will love the detailed and full illustrated instructions and experienced sewers will love how quickly this pattern can be assembled.
Materials:
Fabric: ¾ to 1 yard (0.75 to 1 meter) of any weight woven fabric, including corduroy, suiting, linen, or cotton. Try using fabric scraps for pocket and embellishments.
Notions: ¾” (2 cm) wide elastic for waistband, co-ordinating thread.
Sizing: hip measuring 20" to 23"
