At 1320 yds/lb, this is technically a sport weight yarn, and guidelines recommend needle sizes US3-5. I like to use it for socks though on size US1 needles. It's a bit heavier than fingering weight, but it makes warmer socks. A 4 oz skein (330 yards) is enough for a pair of average women's socks (I wear size 8 shoes and usually have yarn left over). If your feet are larger or you want your socks to come up higher, then you would need two skeins.
All yarn is stored in my studio in a smoke-free home. I do have two rabbits, but they don't go anywhere near my studio.
