This piece is from a series of lumberjacks I have been working on. This is a portrait of Timothy Burr. He goes by Tim. Tim is a third-generation lumberjack in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Every morning at dawn he takes Otter Road up Willoughby Gap in a little red truck to a plot of forested land that has been in his family nearly 127 years. He'll cut trees and walk the forest until dusk each day. Tim still prefers his trusted axe over a chainsaw.
He can tell you endless stories about how his father Elmer and grandfather Saul traveled across the Northeast from Maine to Vermont and even Canada working virgin forests as river pigs, harvesting timber each season. Tim learned the lumberjack trade from his father. Though a slight man, he became known as the strongest lumberjack in all the Northeast forests. Nowadays, the timber he cuts from his family's land is often used by local furniture makers or sold as firewood. Tim has three daughters.
