The Farnsworth House, Plano, Illinois - ink sketch, 11" x 14" matted
zoom
This stupendous glass house, one of only three residences by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the United States, sits serenely on the Fox River almost as if afloat. (There is no foundation, only one central cylindrical core and slim structural legs). The clean lines and exterior glass walls are in stark contrast to the curvilinear random lines of nature outside (the grounds were designed by American landscape architect Lanning Roper). The house, originally a weekend retreat built for a rich and adventurous Dr. Edith Farnsworth, is the epitome of International Style modernism (built 1946-1950).

I drove to Chicago from New York one weekend on a whim specifically to see great American architecture. About 45 miles out of the city here in Plano I was able to get a private tour and relax leisurely on the (Italian travertine limestone) deck, enjoying the river and all the luxurious green against the gleaming white steel. Whether one appreciates this style or not, there is no arguing that this house is what Mies meant by his famous philosophy “Less is more.”

Digital photo reproduction of my original ink sketch.
The 8” x 10” image is printed on Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper with a matte finish. Art is shipped to you signed and delivered (minus the Borchgrevink watermark overlay) with a four-ply textured white mat with a mat board backing – total size: 11” x 14”.
